Santo Domingo’s Church

  • It was built between the XVI and XVII centuries.

  • The façade emphasizes because of its neoclassical style and the tower with a cubic body, the mudejar art. It has only one level inside and two chapels were built subsequently along the main body. The main altar was restored in 1956 using marble, this was made to commemorate the 400 years of the city’s foundation. 

San Caralampio’s Church

  • It was built in 1852  in honour to San Cralampio, martyr who people were devoted to, after the cholera and smallpox epidemic that killed many people in the middle of the XIX century.

  • One of the most important celebrations in Comitan is the San Caralampio’s religious festivity which takes place from the 11th to the 20th of February in the neighbourhood of La Pila.

The Doctor Belisario Dominguez Museum

  • This is a genuine example of a typical Comitecan house from the XIX century. Its balconies and garden give a special aspect to this traditional architecture.

  • Through its six different rooms, the museum describes the life and work of Doctor Belisario Dominguez, martyr of the “free word”.

  • It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Also open on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Hermila Dominguez Art Museum

  • This museum was opened in 1988 by the painters Francisco Toledo and Gunther Gerzso, whose work is exhibited there. It has a permanent exhibition of Rufino Tamayo.

  • This museum houses the artwork of the regional painting school.

  • It is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Programing

  • It was buitl in the 30’s using the place that was occupied by the Dominican Convent.

  • It has a mural painted by Rafael Muñoz Lopez where the history of Comitan and its mayor outstanding personalities are represented.

  • This beautiful building also houses the Archaeological Museum of Comitan that exhibits pieces of the Mayan Culture.

  •  It is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Santa Maria Hotel and Museum

  • It is located 40 minutes from Comitan and settled in the house of an ancient finca. It dates from the XIX century. Beautiful views of the mountains and small lakes can be seen from its marvellous gardens.

  • Its architecture is traditional and the hotel and museum house a great and large collection of antiques and artwork. The collections exhibited include paintings, religious objects and images; and sculptures in wood and marble. These pieces of art are from Mexico, Guatemala, Europe and the Philippines.

National Park "Monte Bello"

  • Less than an hour drive from Comitan, on the border with Guatemala is the Lagos de Montebello National Park (Lakes of Montebello).  There are over 50 lakes here, one of which is half in Mexican Territory and half in Guatemalan; around 10 of the lakes are easily accessible via some well traced roads.

  • The lakes themselves are well worth experiencing; they all reflect turquoise blues and greens, and some of them with the scenic backdrop of the surrounding mountains and forests, the area is great for a whole day's exploration.

  • The lakes have a calm, serene and relaxing feel to them; the air is sweet and pure, and even during busy times, because of its size, you'll always be able to find a quiet corner to just sit and ponder, surrounded by some of nature's most unbelievable creations. 

The Waterfalls "El Chiflon"

  • Situated 30 minutes from Comitan, the eco tourist centre The Chiflon waterfalls emerges in the middle of the valley of sugar cane plantations, forest and mountains.

  • The most distinctive attraction in this area is a great curtain of water formed by the river San Vicente. Along the way to the top of this waterfall you can find several turquoise ponds.

  • This place is perfect to go swimming and have a very pleasant picnic. There are several rustic style shacks to stay and spend a calm and relaxing night surrounded by nature.

  • It will take you approximately 5 hours to visit the whole area.

Colon lakes

  • Located 50 minutes from Comitan, the Colon lakes offer a group of approximately 20 crystalline and deep water lakes where the visitor can swim. Walking through paths between the lakes can be a really pleasant experience. The lakes are connected through little water channels.

  • Near the lakes region there is a Mayan ceremonial centre in the Lagartero area and small waterfalls.

  • It will take you from 4 to 5 hours to visit the whole area.

San Sebastian's  Church

  • The church’s construction dates back to the XVII century. It is located in the plaza of the neighborhood of San Sebastian. The details and construction belongs to the Barroc style.

  • Fray Matias de Cordova y Ordoñez (his sculpture is located next to the church) was the priest of this church when he and the people of Comitan decided to proclaim the independence of the State of Chiapas from Guatemala on August 28, 1821.

City Theater

  • It houses the main shows, cultural and social events of the city.
