A.Z. Tenam Puente

Photo Gallery

  • Located 10 minutes drive from Comitan, it is set on a wooded hillside with good views of the surrounding area from its highest points, Tenam Puente was probably a western outpost during the height of the Maya civilization, dating back to the same period as its neighbour Chincultik, 600 A.D.

  • Tenam Puente is derived from the Nauhua meaning "fort" or "fortified place"; The area covers about 2 square kilometers (about one and a quarter square miles) and was an ancient civic ceremonial center.

  • The most important group of buildings is the Acropolis, at the highest point of this site, offering good views across the area.  The Acropolis buildings are built around a series of patios and plazas, conforming with other similar Maya architectures.

  • It will take you about two hours to see the buildings and enjoy the sights from the highest buildings in Tenam Puente.

A.Z. Chinkultik

Photo Gallery

  • Located 56 kilometres away from Comitan, in the heart of a pinewood forest and next to small lakes, the marvellous Mayan city of Chincultik emerges. It has a ball court and an acropolis that date back from the 600 A.D.

  • The holy blue water hole called “Cenote” is located next to the main Mayan building in this archaeological zone. Other monuments can be found along the Chinkultik area, some of them representing ornately clothed personalities.

  • A beautiful view of the surrounded area including lakes and fields dedicated to the agriculture can be seen at the top of the main building, giving the visitor the chance to capture a wonderful sight of the valley.
