ROSARIO CASTELLANOS  (versión en español)

Nació en la Ciudad de México el 25 de mayo de 1925. Rosario Castellanos, la mayor parte de tiempo de su niñez la pasó en Comitán, Chiapas, México.  Después de viajar por Europa y los Estados Unidos realizando estudios avanzados en estética, regresó al estado mexicano de Chiapas y trabajó con grupos indígenas de teatro en San Cristóbal de las Casas. Mucho de su trabajo, aún con el grupo literario denominado “La Generación de los 50’s”, intentó atravesar la distancia entre la tradición pre-colombina y la cultura europea en México. Esta división social fue complicada para Rosario Castellanos por su responsabilidad en la situación inestable de las mujeres en ambas tradiciones.

 La infancia de Rosario Castellanos fue solitaria, así pasó también la adolescencia y la edad adulta la vivió soltera. La soledad es el aspecto central en las páginas de sus libros. La poesía y prosa fueron los géneros que ella manejó, desde “Balún Canán” (1957), hasta los poemas en conjunto en “Poesía eres Tú” (1972). 

Rosario Castellanos sirvió a México en el extranjero como embajadora de este país en Israel. Desafortunadamente, el 7 de agosto de 1974, Castellanos muere en Tel Aviv a causa de un accidente casero. Fue enterrada en la Ciudad de México en la rotonda de los hombres ilustres.

ROSARIO CASTELLANOS  (English version)

 Born in Mexico City on May 25, 1925, Rosario Castellanos spent much of her childhood in Comitán, in Mayan southern Mexico. After traveling to Europe and to the United States for advanced study in aesthetics, she returned to the province of Chiapas to work with Indian theatre groups and the Indigenous Institute of San Cristóbal. Much of her work, even throughout her involvement with the literary group "The Generation of the '50s," tried to traverse the distance between the pre-Columbian and the European cultural traditions of Mexico. This social division was complicated, for Castellanos, by her awareness of the alienated and disempowered situation of women in both traditions. Rosario Castellanos childhood was lonely, her adolescence desperately so, and as an adult she lived under the sign of singleness. Solitude becomes the thread that sews the pages of her books, linking poetry and prose and running from her novel Balún Canán (1957)… to the poems collected in Poesía no eres tú (You are not Poetry, 1972).  

While serving as Mexican ambassador to Israel, Castellanos died in a freak household accident in Tel Aviv on August 7, 1974. She was buried in the rotunda of Illustrious Men, in Mexico City.*
